The Franco-Prussian War: A Captivating Guide to the War of 1870 between the French Empire and German States and the Role Otto von Bismarck Played in the Unification of Germany
This was a short war (6 months long) with major results。 It showed the weakness of the French and led to the fall of the monarchy in France。 It showed the rising industrialization and modernization of Prussia。 It also led to the creation of a unified Germany, which immediately became a political and military powerhouse。As is their habit, Captivating History sets the stage by explaining the forces within the French and the Prussian governments that eventually led to war。 Then they compare how p This was a short war (6 months long) with major results。 It showed the weakness of the French and led to the fall of the monarchy in France。 It showed the rising industrialization and modernization of Prussia。 It also led to the creation of a unified Germany, which immediately became a political and military powerhouse。As is their habit, Captivating History sets the stage by explaining the forces within the French and the Prussian governments that eventually led to war。 Then they compare how prepared France and Prussia were for their coming battles。 The strategy and tactics of the battles were discussed, as well as errors made by each side。 The news of Bazaine's shocking surrender was just that -- shocking。 However, the French refused to surrender and the Prussians moved on to Paris and began shelling。 Four thousand citizens died weekly -- from starvation and cold。 Things got so bad in France that they devolved into civil war。 The government in Tours was losing its grip on France。 The war raised nationalistic feelings in the Germans states and led to the unification of Germany。 The reparations France was made to make (and loss of lands), would lead to hard feelings and wanting to even the score。 Thus, the stage was set for World War I。 。。。more
Branko,
This could have been a great book but it is not。 While chapters 1 to 3 and chapter 8 deserve five stars, the chapters in between are almost complete failure。 These chapters describe the war itself, the battles but do so without maps, or just a few very old maps。 This makes reading these chapters difficult。 On the contrary, first chapters, dealing with causes of war are excellent as is the chapter comparing the strengths and weaknesses of both French and Prussian army。 Last chapters, dealing with This could have been a great book but it is not。 While chapters 1 to 3 and chapter 8 deserve five stars, the chapters in between are almost complete failure。 These chapters describe the war itself, the battles but do so without maps, or just a few very old maps。 This makes reading these chapters difficult。 On the contrary, first chapters, dealing with causes of war are excellent as is the chapter comparing the strengths and weaknesses of both French and Prussian army。 Last chapters, dealing with the aftermath are equally good。 Not only did Germans defeat the French, they imposed extremely humiliating terms of surrender and conditions for peace on the French, the favour that the French will return in WWI and Hitler return back in WWII。I have never heard of this war but now realise how crucial it is。 It led to creation of unified Germany and the fall of French superiority in continental part of Europe, thus demolishing the power balance on the continent。 This, combined with the Scramble for Africa and German participation in it, led to realignment of alliances in Europe which persisted through two world wars。Recommended。 。。。more
Christopher Nelson,
They start blood that detailed history of the Franco-Prussian WarA very well written and concise history of the causes and the after effects of the franco-Prussian War。 Obviously, the majority of the book is the history of the war itself。 While there are likely longer books about this conflict this book is enough to give you a good overview of it。 Definitely worth the price of the time that it takes to read it。
Bruce Wilson,
A very good overview of a very important war。
Kelsey,
Bismarck, the Holy Roman Empire, Napoleon, and a secret "coffee grinder"。。。 cool! Now, I know in a previous review I mentioned the books being sort of like a textbook but this one was different。 I felt at times that the information was too much but then as I kept reading it fell more into a story。 I think that is why I enjoy these books so much。 It's as if you never know what each of these books might show to you。 It is always a surprise for me when I get the opportunity to read。 Bismarck, the Holy Roman Empire, Napoleon, and a secret "coffee grinder"。。。 cool!
